Bernice Louine W. Hutchins, 92, of McConnelsville passed away April 9, 2013 at Highland Oaks Health Center, McConnelsville, OH.
She was born on Good Friday, March 25, 1921 in Manchester Township, Morgan County, the first born of the late Clarence B. and Concella Blanche (Smith) Willey.
She was a 1939 graduate of Manchester Rural High School, and thereafter worked and lived at Hill's Store in Reinersville. She married USN submariner Joseph R. Hutchins of Reinersville on July 12, 1945 in Malta, OH, while he was on a six week's home leave from the Pacific War Theater.
They moved about the U.S.A. while Joseph pursued his Navy career, and traveled together to Europe, Israel, and South America while Joseph was with the U.S. State Department 1964-1976. They were assigned to the U.S. Embassy in Canberra, Australia 1965-1969, which provided them a wealth of fond experiences and memories. Their love for travel continued in retirement with several bus tours of the U.S.A. and Canada.
Louine was a devoted wife and mother and skilled in the homemaker arts of cooking, baking, gardening, sewing, crocheting, preserving, and accounting. She was known for her delicious pies of all flavors. She loved to play her favorite hymns on the piano. She was an avid genealogist and a life member of several county and state genealogical and historical societies. She and Joseph were enthusiastic boosters of the Manchester Rural High School reunions and annual banquets.
Louine was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in McConnelsville. She and Joseph were longtime volunteers at both Genesis Health Good Samaritan Hospital and Mark Rest Center, now Highland Oaks Health Center. In 2001, they were recognized on Valentine's Day by Governor Taft's wife at Joined Hearts in Giving, honoring Ohioans married 50 years or longer and who share a commitment to volunteerism.
Surviving are her son, Lloyd J. (Ellen) of Groton, CT, and three grandsons, Edward L. (Alicia) of Raleigh, NC, Eric M. of Rockville, MD, and Allan J. of Groton, CT; one great-grandson Owen of Raleigh, NC; brothers, Gerald A. Willey of Marietta, and Verle E. Willey of Orange Park, FL; one nephew, Stephen L. Willey of Columbus; and a niece, Suzanne Singleton or Orange Park, FL.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph, and her sister, Glenna A. Willey.
Funeral arrangements are being handled by Miller-Huck Funeral Home, McConnelsville. Calling hours will be from 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Friday, April 12.
The funeral service will be at 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 13 at the funeral home. Internment will be at the Sharon Cemetery, Sharon.
