Civil War veteran. Served in Company G, 5th Regiment, Vermont Infantry. Drafted on May 13, 1864 in Mooretown, Vermont; mustered out June 24 1865 due to rheumatism.
At some point after his discharge, Virgil went to live in Grand Rapids, Michigan. His son, Charles D Collins lived in the same city. Virgil was admitted to the National home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on July 9 - September 16 1892 and March 7 - September 30 1896. Hospital records indicate he was married, but separated.
