Joette B. Backus, age 74, of 1315 S. 12th Street, Manitowoc, died early Tuesday morning, April 9, 2013, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc, with her family by her side.
She was born on May 16, 1938, in Manitowoc, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Joseph and Bernice (Lehman) Gallenberger. Joette was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, Class of 1956. Joette enjoyed helping her daughter, Jennifer, at Jenn's Java on Washington Street in Manitowoc. She also enjoyed her backyard and her puppies Shadow and Star. Joette's favorite thing to do was drink beer, smoke cigarettes, do crafts and listen to the Milwaukee Brewers lose. She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish.
Survivors include her children and their spouses: Joseph M. Backus, Two Rivers, Marijo Backus-Garbe and Scott Garbe, Cleveland, WI, Raymond Backus, Manitowoc, Jennifer Backus and Aaron Kowalski, Manitowoc, Shirley Backus (widow of Scott), Manitowoc; 15 grandchildren; one sister: Bernette Davis, Manitowoc; and two brothers and sisters-in-law: Al Radey & Chris Proctor, Middle Inlet and John & Cindy Gallenberger, Manitowoc. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. She was preceded in death by a son: Scott Backus and a granddaugther: Hope Mary Backus. She was also preceded in death by a sister-in-law: Susan Radey and a brother-in-law: Robert Davis.
Cremation has occurred at All-Care Cremation Center, Manitowoc, and a private graveside service will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc.
At Joette's request, her family would like to invite you to Jenn's Java on Friday, April 12, 2013 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to laugh, celebrate and drink a cup of coffee in her memory.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Holy Family Memorial Medical C.C.U., especially Colleen, Sue and Kari, for the wonderful care extended to her and her family.
