Roman Catholic Cardinal. Born in Romagnano Sesia within the Northern region of Italy, he completed the necessary requirements to enter the priesthood and was ordained at the age of twenty-three in 1945. He was assigned to the Diocese of Novara and furthered his studies at the Pontifical Ecclesiastical Academy. He served as a diplomat and was allocated to Lebanon and later Venezuela from the late 1940s until the mid 1950s. This experience was followed by his assignment as the first section for Extraordinary Affairs of the Secretariat of State of the United States followed by France. In 1968, he was ordained bishop and received placement as Titular Archbishop of Roselle and later as Apostolic Nuncio to Nicaragua and Honduras. From 1973 until 1977, he served as nuncio of Zaire and later nuncio to France from 1988 to 1995. He was named pro-president of the Administration of the Patrimony of the Holy See and in 1998 Pope John Paul II elevated him to the status of Cardinal, the same year he retired. Originally buried in the family tomb at the cemetery of the Romagnano Sesia, in accordance with his wishes, his remains were eventually transferred to the local abbatial church and reburied in a specially constructed sarcophagus in December 2016.
