He enlisted in 1950 in the Air Force in Riverside, Calif., where he spent 20 years in SAC as a crew chief on B-36 and B-52.
Following his retirement in 1970 he worked for University of California, Riverside.
In 1980 he moved to Spokane and worked at the Bureau of Mines, retiring in 1994.
Mr. Carlsen enjoyed bowling, boating and fishing.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Model A Club of Spokane.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Lorraine; a daughter, Stephanie; a son, Rod; two sisters, Elva and Vera; and four grandchildren.
