Michael Scalabrino (108186990)

Suggested edit: Michael Scalabrino taught us so many things throughout his life that spanned nearly a century, but perhaps none were of greater significance than to love and care for those we cherish. He was a man of faith who was content in all things - a true gift in the lives of all those within his reach.

As the decade that became known as the Roaring Twenties dawned in America, a young couple from Grand Rapids, Michigan, was thrilled with the birth of a healthy baby boy on August 20, 1920. Baby Michael was the youngest of three boys born to his parents, John and Francesca (Noto) Scalabrino, and was raised in the family home alongside his brothers, James and Peter. The Scalabrino family were members of Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church.

After graduating from South High School, Michael worked as a riveter at Hayes Manufacturing making aircraft wings for the war. After WWII enveloped our nation, he was drafted into the Army Air Corps on August 12, 1942. While in the service Michael worked as an engine mechanic and on gunner repair in the European Theater. At one point his plane was shot down, which resulted in Michael spending the following two years in a German POW camp. As the Russians were advancing, Michael along with 6000 other prisoners were forced by the Germans to retreat from the camp on a winter death march for three months. Michael earned 4 Bronze Stars and a Purple Heart for his service.

Not to be forgotten during this time was Michael’s deepening love with a young lady from his school and church named Josephine Monticello. After corresponding through letters while he was in the service the couple was married on July 20, 1946, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church after he returned from the war. The first lived on Putnman SE for several years before eventually, moving to the northwest side of the city where they became founding members of Holy Spirit Catholic Church. The majority of Michael’s career was spent at the United States Postal Service until he retired after 35 years.

Michael will be remembered as a family man through and through. Together with his wife he was blessed to raise four children: Frances, Rose, John and Sherrie. There were fun-filled family vacations to Big Star Lake, countless museums throughout Michigan, and Florida on one occasion.

Life will never be the same without Michael Scalabrino here as he brought so much joy to the world around him. He will be remembered as a great cook of bar-b-qued chicken and steaks and winemaker and a history and art buff, but most of all he will be remembered as a devoted family man. Whenever asked "How do you feel Mike" he always answered, "like I'm 21"
