Death of the ex member for Montreal West.
Much sympathy will be felt at the news of Mr. Gault's death, which took place this afternoon at his residence.
Mathew Hamilton Gault was the son of the late Leslie Gault, merchant and shipowner of Strabane, County Tyrone, Ireland a thriving town, pleasantly situated with many historical associations. He was married in Montreal to Miss Elizabeth J. Bourne. He early became officially connected with several large mercantile undertakings. He was President of the Exchange Bank, President of the Montreal Loan and Mortgage Company, Vice Pres. of the Sun Mutual Life, Vice Pres. of the Montreal Mining Company, Director of the Richelieu and Ontario Navigation Company, Dominion telegraph Company and Windsor Hotel Company, resident manager of the British American Assurance Company for this Province, chief agent of the Royal Insurance Company of England, (a position occupied with Mr. Tatley till the last). Mr. Gault was also founder of the Irish Protestant Benevolent Society of this city; and for many years he took an active part in the Garrison Artillery, retiring with the rank of Captain. He was first returned to Parliament at the general election of 1878 for Montreal West, by a majority of 1,737 votes and was again elected in 1882, retiring in 1887. In Politics Mr. Gault was a Conservative.

The Hon. Matthew Hamilton Gault M.P., J.P. (July 18, 1822 – June 1, 1887) was an Irish-Canadian financier and politician. In 1865, he founded Sun Life Financial at Montreal. He was elected to the Canadian House of Commons in the 1878 election for the riding of Montreal West. A Conservative, he was re-elected in 1882 and served until his death in 1887. During the winter he lived with his family at Braehead in Montreal's Golden Square Mile. He was the uncle of Brigadier-General Andrew Hamilton Gault.
