Widow' s Declaration for Pension
State of Iowa, Blackhawk, County
On this 24th day of April A.D. 1869, personally appeared before me G.A. Eberhart Clerk of the District Court, within and for the County and State above named and by Law duly authorized to administer oaths for general purposes, Sarah A. Nichols who, after being duly sworn according to law, declares and says that she is aged forty-? years, and that she is a resident of Cedar Falls in the County of Blackhawk and State of Iowa doth on her oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the provision made by the Act of Congress approved July 14, 1862; That she is the widow of William S. Brown who was a Private in Company D commanded by Captain E. Boardman of the 21st Regiment of Iowa ? Volunteers, commanded by Colonel ? ? in the War of 1861, who died at ? Hospital Washington D.C. on or about the 4 day of September 1864, and the cause of his death was insanity produced by a stroke which he contracted while in the service of the United States and in his line of duty.

That she was married to the said William S. Brown on the 9th day of Nov. 1849 at Webster county of Worcester, State of Massachusetts by one E. Cany? and that her name before her said marriage was Sarah Ann McCracken.

And that she has remained a widow ever since that period until the 7th day of Dec. 1865 when she married John Nichols as will more fully appear by reference to the roof hereto annexed. She further states that at his death her said husband left him surviving only the following named children who were then under the age of sixteen years, that said children reside at Cedar Falls, Iowa and that the names and dates of birth of said children are as follows: Mary L. May 12, 1851, Frances J. Oct. 9, 1856 & Emma E. Nov. 15, 1858. and she hereby constitutes and appoints AC. ? of Cedar Falls County of Blackhawk and State of Iowa her lawful attorney to prosecute her said claim, and authorizes him to receive the certificate therefor when ready for delivery. She also declares that she has not in any way been engaged in, or aided, or abetted the rebellion in the United States.
