Melvin served as the first teacher in the hamlet of Clintonville, teaching in a log cabin school to the west of the old Cody house. He first started teaching about 1824 at age 18. There are now no traces of it, but as a child ,my grandmother, Myrtle Seymour Withey took me across from her house on U.S. Route 20 in Clintonville and showed me the last traces of the foundation. This school was later replaced a mile West from there toward Skaneateles by another country school which functioned until June , 1951. It is still in use today as a private home.

Melvin married Almira Hill on Oct.7, 1835, in the Town of Fenner, Madison County, N.Y. Almira was the daughter of Daniel Hill, A Revolutionary War Minuteman and Alice Gross. Both are buried in the Old Peterboro Cemetery In Peterboro, Madison County, New York.
They had 7 children.
