Lonnie Nelson, 72, died at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2009, in De Soto.

Mr. Nelson was born Dec. 16, 1936, in Grimsby, the son of John and Rose (Johnson) Nelson. He served in the U.S. Air Force for more than 20 years and was a Vietnam veteran. Mr. Nelson retired in 1974 with the rank of master sergeant.

He was united in marriage to Jeanine Ann Cavaness on June 8, 1956, in Murphysboro. She preceded him in death Oct. 21, 2005.

Mr. Nelson was employed by the West Bus Service and drove a bus for Murphysboro District 186 from September 1993 until Jan. 16, 2009.

He will be greatly missed by all.

Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Pam Nelson of Carterville, and Marcie and Kent Buckles of De Soto; two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Tammy Nelson of Herrin, and Lonnie Jr. and Gracie Nelson of Burleson, Texas; 11 grandchildren, Chris, Nathan and wife, Lacy, and Kristen Lipe, Ashley Atwood and husband, Nathan, Jerrod Nelson, Zachary, Ian and Sierra Buckles and Taylor, Brooke and Brett Nelson; three great-grandchildren, Madyson Lipe, Jayson Lipe and Zoey Lipe; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rhonda and David Roseberry of Pomona, Sharon Kimsey of Gorham, and Renee and Lloyd Kranawetter of Jacob; three brothers and sisters-in-law, John and Cora Nelson of Fort Meyers, Fla., Larry and Debbie Nelson of Shelbyville, Ky., and Ronald and Yong Ae Nelson of Las Vegas, Nev.; and many nieces and nephews.

Mr. Nelson was preceded in death by his wife, Jeanine; his parents; one brother, Gary; and one granddaughter, Kelley Nelson.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday, June 15, 2009, in Crawshaw Funeral Home in Murphysboro, with the Rev. Wes Henson officiating. Burial will be in Walker Hill Cemetery in Grand Tower with military rites provided by the U.S. Air Force Honor Guard from Scott Air Force Base. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday, June 14, 2009, at the funeral home.
