Minister, Author. The first African-American minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church and the first African-American woman to write an extended account of her own life: "The Life and Religious Experience of Jarena Lee" (1836), which she later updated as "Religious Experience and Journal of Mrs. Jarena Lee" (1849). Born to a free black family in New Jersey, she converted to the AME Church and began preaching in 1820. Her faith inspired her to venture beyond her home church and preach throughout the northeast US, Canada, and even in slave states. Lee's autobiography offers a unique perspective of her era.
