FRANCES PRIESTLY TOULMIN

Miss Frances Priestly Toulmin, of Montgomery Inn, Bryn Mawr, died yesterday in Bryn Mawr Hospital after an illness.

Miss Toulmin was born in Northumberland and was a daughter of the late Major Harry Toulmin. She is survived by her two brothers, Dr. Harry Toulmin, of Haverford, vice president and medical director of the Penn Mutual Life Insurance Company, and Priestley Toulmin of Birmingham, Ala. Funeral services will be held at 3 P.M. today in Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church. Burial will be in Northumberland.

Philadelphia Public Ledger, 26 Apr 1928

While much of of the story of Fannie Toulmin's life may never be told, she emerged and became part of nursing history when she joined the second graduating class of the Johns Hopkins Hospital nurses' training program in 1890.

She was numbered among the 21 women graduates in the Baltimore Sun's article on the commencement ceremony. Fannie's happiness and pride shine out of her portrait, for which she posed in her Hopkins Hospital nursing uniform.

Fannie was the descendant of two storied Unitarians: scientist Dr. Joseph Priestley on the side of her mother, Frances Biddle Priestley Toulmin (1829-1916), and on her father's side, Judge Harry Toulmin (1766-1823), Superior Court Judge for the Tombigbee District of the Mississippi Territory. He was the first U.S. district judge to hold court in Alabama.

Her brother Dr. Harry Toulmin is buried in West Laurel Cemetery, Bala Cynwyd, Montgomery Co., Pa.; her parents may be buried near Frances here in River View.

The Chesney Medical Archives at JHU has a photograph of a group of JHU nurses that includes Frances. She is seated, front row, far left, looking down.
