He married Martha I. "Mattie" Hiestand on May 28, 1890 in Grand Rapids, MI.
By 1900 they were separated and before 1909, divorced, as Mattie married William
J. Melville in Grand Rapids on Nov. 15, 1909, her half-sister's widower.
The 1900 census (Grand Rapids) says Mattie was mother of one child but none had
survived. The 1910 CA census says she had two children but neither had survived.
The 1894 MI state census listed one child, namely - Ralph W. E. Deter, aged 0 years.

It does not appear that Samuel remarried again after his divorce.
Census reports him as a travelling salesman. Another report says he is a photographer.
No record of a second marriage is known.
(see Isaac Hiestand memorial for further information.)
