Fred C. Thomsen, 88, whose 13-year stint as head coach of the Arkansas football team is the second longest in Razorback history, died at Springfield, MO.
Thomsen guided the Razorbacks to a 55-61-1 record from 1929-41. His best years were 1929, when the Razorbacks went 7-2; 1933, when the team finished 7-3-1, and 1936, when the Razorbacks were 7-3.
Only Frank Broyles, who coached the Razorbacks for 19 seasons, 1958-1976, had a longer tenure at Arkansas.
Thomsen attended the University of Nebraska, where he played end on the Cornhuskers' football team. He also was a member of Chennault's Flying Tigers air squad in World War II.
