Walter Raleigh Washburn was the youngest of seven children born to Rev. John Moore Washburn and Irene Simms Ely in Ewing, Illinois.
He went to college in 1892 and earned Doctor of Medicine from St. Louis College of Physicians and Surgeons in March 1898. Dr. Washburn then served as an USV Cavalry Medical Officer in the Spanish American War - Cuba and later in the Philippines as a battle field surgeon between 1898 and 1905.
He had helped his father, a Primitive Baptist Elder and Preacher, complete a mission in Floresville Texas as a boy, and apparently enjoyed Texas. So upon completion of his military service, he headed for Dallas. He met and married Emma O. Riggs in 1908, and they established an ear, eye, nose, and throat practice in Cleburne, Texas. The Santa Fe railroad had a major maintenance operation there and the community had boom-town level growth through the 1920s. He served that Cleburne Texas community for many years as a family doctor.
