Mildred J. Gerland, age 81, of Rice Lake, WI, died Sunday, April 7, 2013 at Thomas Landing in Rice Lake.

She was born on September 6, 1931 in Rice Lake, WI to Harry and Alice (Hansen) Gerland. Mildred graduated from Rice Lake High School in 1949 and continued her education at St. Olaf College receiving a degree in Business Education in 1953 and later received a Masters and Educational Specialist degree at UW-Stout. Mildred taught in Wisconsin schools including, High School, the Fox Valley Technical College and in the UW System especially interested in working with disadvantaged students. After retiring from teaching she owned and operated Mil's Art Shoppe in Prairie du Chien. In the early 90's she moved to Eau Claire where she volunteered at Coalition of WI Aging Group, L.E. Phillips Public Library, Eau Claire Regional Arts Center, Seniors American Day - UW-EC, Literacy Volunteers of America - Chippewa Valley and Chippewa Valley Museum. She was a member of the Honor Society in Education, Kappa Delta Pi. Mildred spent her leisure time reading, painting, doing crafts and spending time with family.

Mildred is survived by a sister and brother-in-law, Judith & John Dahlgren of Rice Lake, WI; a brother and sister-in-law, Gordon & Ruth Gerland of Rice Lake, WI; 3 nieces, 2 nephews, 4 grandnieces and 4 grandnephews; and an aunt, Sylvia Martin of OK. She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Alice Gerland; numerous aunts, uncles and several cousins.

Funeral Services will be held 3:00 PM Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Appleyard's Home for Funerals in Rice Lake, WI, Rev. Peter Muschinske officiating, with interment in Nora Cemetery in Rice Lake. Visitation will be held from 2 - 3 PM Tuesday at Appleyard's Home for Funerals.
