I used the birth year of 1828 for Alexander, because that is what is on his headstone. Several other references use the date of 1829.

Alexander married his first cousin Jane S. Harper on Apr. 6, 1853 in Ashtabula County, OH, probably in Harpersfield.

Alexander fought in the Civil War, entering service on Aug. 24, 1861 as a private in Co. K, 2nd Ohio Volunteer Cavalry. He was soon promoted on Sept. 20, 1861, to be the Regimental Veterinary Surgeon, as a member of the Regimental Field and Staff, with the rank of Sergeant Major.
He was discharged on Feb. 17, 1863, according to the 1890 census of Civil War Veterans.

Care must be taken when researching Alexander, as he had a first cousin with the same name who was born just a few months and a few miles distant. They also both enlisted in the Co. K, 2nd OVC. Finally, they both died just a couple of months and a few miles distant from each other.
