Born Jun 15, 1869 in Montecello, KentuckyJames McGoffin Back was patriarch of one of the fine pioneer families of the Garland area. He was born June 15, 1869, inMonticello, Kentucky, and grew up in Kentucky as the son of a pioneer farm family whose basic crop was tobacco. He attended school in Monticello, and after finishing school, he started farming on his own in WayneCounty, Kentucky.

In January 1883, he married Louise Hopkins and continued pursing his farming career. In 1887 their first child was born; a daughter they named Elsia. Soon after Elsia was born, several years of drought caused farming in Kentucky to become alosing proposition. After four consecutive dry years. Back moved his family to Texas in 1893. By this time he had two sons, Joe and Cleve. His wife's aunt had previously moved to Texas and settled in the community of Murphy. The aunt located a 71 acre farm for them on the east bank of Rowlett Creek, north of Garland on Brand Road.

When the Back family arrived in Texas, they were faced with building a house on the seventy-one acre farm and clearing enough ground to start raising crops. With only hand tools and two mules, they cleared about forty acres of timber andstarted their new Rowlett Creek farm. The new ground was very fertile and the family prospered.

During the ensuing years, six more children were bom; Lavonia, Wayne, Oscar, Emma, Ruth and Mary. This pioneer Texas family was destined to have great influence on the future of the area. Elsia married Curtis Taber and settled on a farmJames McGoffin Back died on June 10, 1934.http://www.dallaspioneer.org/stories/historical.php?ID=271
