He was a native of Island Grove and had been a resident of Palatka since 1938, coming from DeLand where he had graduated from the Stetson University with a bachelor of science degree in business administration. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served for three years. In his earlier years, along with his brother, Elton, he owned and operated Mar-Twin's, a shoe and clothing store in Palatka. He later owned and operated Al Martin Motors in Palatka. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Palatka where he had been a Sunday School teacher. He was a former member of Calvary Baptist Church in Palatka. He had served as a volunteer at the Palatka Christian Service Center and the Bread of Life in Palatka. He had a ministry of distributing gospel tracts, bibles, bible storybooks and Christian cassette tapes. He enjoyed walking in the Ravine Gardens State Park in Palatka.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Elam Martin, Hamilton Martin and Otto Martin, and four sisters, Verna Sisley, Frieda Rice, Merris Bennett and Ilene Martin.
He is survived by his wife, Helen S. Martin of Palatka; one son, Jimmy S. Martin of St. Augustine; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Ken Echols of Palatka, and Teresa and Mike Turner of St. Augustine; one brother and sister-in-law, Elton and Sherry Martin of Palatka; one sister, Inez Nelson of Jacksonville; one sister-in-law, Pat Martin of Williston; five grandchildren, Allen Anderson of Palatka, Jimmy Martin and Houston Turner, both of St. Augustine, and Gina Mangus and Denise Terhune, both of Jacksonville; six great-grandchildren, Kelsey Martin, Cade Martin, Jacob Martin, Allison Anderson, Madison Terhune and Nicholas Mangus.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2001, at First Baptist Church of Palatka with Dr. Donald Aycock and the Rev. Jesse Wooten officiating. Burial will follow in the West View Cemetery in Palatka with military honors bestowed by the U.S. Army.
