Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. When the Civil War broke out he was the first man to enlist in the 96th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. He rose to be Lieutenant Colonel in 1863 and Colonel of the regiment in 1865. At the Battle of Plymouth, April 16, 1864, he was captured, sent to Libby Prison and to prisons at Macon and Danville, Georgia. On August 3, 1864, at Charleston Military Prison, he and 50 other Union officers were exchanged for 50 Confederate officers. Back in action with his regiment, he lost a leg at the Battle of Fair Oaks on October 27, 1864, while carrying a wounded private from the field. For his merit and devotion to duty, he was brevetted Brigadier General, US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war, he was appointed Deputy Collector of Internal Revenue for Clinton County, New York in 1866. In 1867, he was elected County Clerk, resigning in 1878 to accept the post of agent and Warden of Clinton Prison, which he held until 1876, when President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him Collector of Customs for the District of Champlain, serving until 1880. In 1888, he was elected Assemblyman from Clinton County. In 1889, President Benjamin Harrison appointed him again Collector of Customs for the District of Champlain, which office he held until 1898.
