A native of France, Justin Gras came to Shreveport to work in the grocery of his uncle. He later started his own grocery business and began to speculate in real estate. By the 1920's Gras was the largest landowner in Caddo Parish. He gave generously to his adopted community as well to his home village in the Pyrenees, rebuilding its church after its destruction in World War I. He was well known for both his business acumen and for his generosity.
