Captain Richard McClung
Family, friends and firefighters from Los Angeles and Ventura counties this week honored the life of Capt. Richard McClung, a 27-year veteran of the L.A. County Fire Department who died on April 4.
The L.A. County department said in a statement that it was deeply shocked and saddened by the sudden off-duty death of McClung. Fire department officials and local community leaders declined to comment on the circumstances of the death.
McClung was a Thousand Oaks resident in charge of Fire Station 144 in Westlake Village. He was in his early 50s.
McClung joined the L.A. County Fire Department in 1985 and was captain at Station 144 for 10 years. He began his firefighting career as a member of the Ventura County Fire Department ground crew.
Final respects for McClung began with a traditional flag ceremony at Station 144 on April 11 followed by a memorial service at Calvary Community Church in Westlake on April 15. Leaders of the Local 1014 firefighter union described McClung as a "solid member of the Los Angeles County Fire Department as well as a friend to all who had the honor of meeting him." "He will be truly missed, such a gentle person," said Westlake Village Mayor Philippa Klessig at a recent City Council meeting. Ray Taylor, city manager for Westlake Village, told The Acorn that McClung was a "wonderful man" and public servant."He was very committed to serving in the fire depa rtment and really put the department's creed protecting the health, welfare and safety of residents as his first priority," Taylor said.
Council member Susan McSweeney, a former kindergarten teacher, said McClung was always welcoming when she visited the local fire station with her students. "He was always pleasant. Everything you think of when you think of a firefighter: patient, kind and brave," said McSweeney, who recalled an instance when McClung saved a girl's life because he made a quick decision to airlift her to a local hospital. McClung is survived by his wife, Monique, and three children.

It is with heavy heart that Los Angeles County Firefighters Local 1014 President Dave Gillotte, the Executive Board of L1014 along with Fire Chief Daryl Osby announce the passing of our Brother, Fire Captain Rick McClung.

Rick was assigned to LAC Fire Station 144, A shift, in Westlake Village. Brother McClung passed away while off duty. He was assisted by members of the Ventura County Professional Firefighters Local 1364. The VCPFF's from stations 30 & 31 provided support, dignity and honor to our brother during their time with him and well after his passing.

Rick is survived by his wife Monique, Son Cole and his daughters Madison and Brooke.

The Department, 1014 and our members are providing support to Rick's family, his station, Battalion 5 and others. The depth of our brotherhood and sisterhood is once again being demonstrated. In the coming days we will be putting out information on Rick's services as the family makes their difficult decisions.

Rick was a strong member of our Union, a solid member of the Los Angeles County Fire Department as well as a friend to all who had the honor of meeting him. We will miss Rick, we will honor him but we will never forget him.
