Margaret was an author of children's books and poetry. For many years she edited the children's department of the Detroit Free Press. She was a graduate of the Rutger Institute of New York City, and received the gold medal of her class.

Married, first, Dr. James B. Wyckoff, from whom she was apparently divorced between 1854 and 1858. They lived in New York City.

It appears from the 1860 census that after the couple divorced, their son James either stayed with his father or went to live with other relatives, while Margaret and daughter Pearl moved to Brooklyn, NY where they are listed living with Margaret's second husband, Solomon Eytinge. Dr. Wyckoff died shortly after moving to Jerseyville, Illinois, where he had extended family, in 1863.

Children, both born in New York City:
1. James S. Wyckoff, born in July 1850 and died sometime between 1900 and 1910. He married Margaret "Maggie" L. Johnson of Hopkinsville, KY on 10 Jan 1876, and they had five children, of whom three survived infancy: Pearl, Ralph Henry, and Carl Barclay, and another, Don, lived only from February 10-15, 1892. The family lived in Litchfield, Montgomery County, IL.
2. Pearl, born 27 Jan 1854 and died 6 Mar 1914 in Atlantic City, NJ. She was married twice and divorced twice, both times to Dr. J.W. Yard.

Margaret married, second, Solomon "Sol" Eytinge, Jr., June 1858, in Brooklyn, NY. The Rev. Henry Ward Beecher performed the ceremony, and humorist Mortimer Thomson, whose pen name was Q.K. Philander Doesticks, was the best man. Margaret and Sol had no children together.
