Eugene P. Horton, 91, of Whiting, formerly of Sloan, Iowa, died Wednesday, April 3, 2013, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting.
Memorial services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, May 4, at Pleasant View Care Center in Whiting, for both Eugene and his wife, Kathryn who passed away March 11, 2013.
Root Funeral Home in Onawa is in charge of arrangements.
Gene was born January 16, 1922, on a farm in Adair County, Iowa, the son of William and Nellie Horton and resided in Whiting at Pleasant View.
Gene married Kathryn Johnson in 1945 in Correctionville, Iowa. During his career in the U.S. Marine Corps, Gene and Kathryn lived in numerous places during his tours of duty and later retirement. Favorites were Swansboro, North Carolina, Rochelle, Illinois, Heber Springs, Arkansas and Sloan, Iowa.
Gene was a graduate of Plato High School in Illinois and held positions with Toastmaster, Elgin Watch Company and as assistant manager for Woolworth's Department Store before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1942.
He served 20 years in the Marines, seeing action and serving in New Caledonia, Baniks, the Russell Islands, Guadalcanal, Hawaii, Japan and Okinawa.
He held numerous positions during his military career including Inspector/Instructor Staff in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Danville, Illinois and Memphis, Tennessee.
Always an avid outdoorsman. Following retirement, he managed Lindsey's Trout Dock at Rainbow Resort on the Little Red River near Heber Springs, Arkansas. He wrote the Outdoor Column for the Ogle County Life Newspaper in Rochelle, Illinois; he fished, gardened and enjoyed life.
Surviving are sons, Walter G. (Veronica) Horton of Sloan and William G. Horton of Boxford, Massachusetts; his brother, Melvin Horton; three grand-children; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Kathryn; his daughter, Cynthia Stawick; grandson, Michael Horton; four brothers; and four sisters.
