Secretly buried in a garden on the grounds of St. Cecilia Church in nearby Kearny, the unidentified body of this infant girl, who later came to be known as "Baby Cecilia", was discovered by the church's pastor, Father Ward, while planting flower bulbs on March 22, 2005. According to investigators, the baby was of white or Hispanic origin, and had been only a few days old at the time of death, apparently of natural causes. It is thought that the baby was not born in a hospital setting, and that her mother or parents may be illegal aliens who remain anonymous for fear of deportation. The infant's funeral from St. Cecilia's Church and burial in Holy Cross Cemetery were made possible by charitable contributions from the community, including the voluntary services of a Kearny undertaker and the donation of a stone by a Jersey City monument company.
