Sherman's father, John "Frank" Tate, married his mother, Jennie Leslie, about 1864 and they had two children--Sherman Walter Tate, born 1865, and Charles Leslie Tate, born 1867. (Two other names that appear on the 1870 and 1880 censuses--"Thomas" and "Herman"--were actually a misrecording and a mistranscription of Sherman; there were only 2 sons.) John and Leslie were divorced in 1871.

Sherman married Josephine Helen Luthin in 1896 in Chicago. They had four daughters--Marguerite Alice (linked); Sarah Elizabeth, 1898-1990 in California, married Mr. Henderson; Blanche Jeanette, 1901-1983 in California, married Mr. Greene; and Josephine Helen, 1913-2000 in Illinois. Sherman worked as a house painter and Josephine was a dressmaker. Their children were born and raised in DuPage County, Illinois, and they were still living there when Sherman died, but Josephine moved to California afterwards (two of their daughters had moved there). She was returned to Illinois to be buried with Sherman when she died.
