MASON CITY, Iowa - Alice "Louise" Kress, 84, passed away on Thursday, May 6, 2010, at Good Shepherd Care Center in Mason City, Iowa. Funeral services will be Monday, May 10, 2010, 10 a.m. at Runge Mortuary in Davenport, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday from 4 to 6 p.m. at the mortuary. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery in Davenport. Memorials may be directed to the American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 11454, Alexandria, VA 22312.

Louise was born on August 12, 1925, in Haydock, Iowa. She was the daughter of Earl and Leona Franzen. She graduated from Roosevelt High School in St. Louis, Mo. She was united in marriage to Robert L. Kress, Sr., on March 31, 1944, at McClellan Heights Church in Davenport.

Louise was very active in her church starting with becoming the church organist at the age of 12. She served as an elder and deacon and was very involved with the youth activities. She was a member of McClellan Heights Church which later became St. Andrew Presbyterian Church for over 72 years.

She assembled tanks during World War II at the Rock Island Arsenal. After she was married, she started teaching piano and organ in her home studio. She was admired for her wonderful talent as a great musician. The family spent many happy hours gathered around the piano singing and laughing. Even after her retirement, she was always willing to play the piano for sing-a-longs whenever asked.

Her hobbies included fishing and sewing. She loved fishing on Lake Ada in Minnesota where they spent many memorable family vacations.

Survivors include her son and daughter-in-law, Robert Jr. and Sarah Kress, Mason City, Iowa; granddaughters, Cheri (George) Collins, Mason City, Iowa, Amy (Jared) Shuppy, Bettendorf, Iowa, and Kelly (Dr. Jay) Koenen, Newton, Iowa; great-grandsons, Skye Koenen and Nathan Shuppy; sister, Beverly Mattiford, Niles, Mich.; sister-in-law, JoAnn Franzen, Davenport, Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Robert Sr., her daughter, Sue Swarts, and her brother, Norwood Franzen.
