Cynthia L. Henry, of North Charleston, SC, widow of John F. Henry, died April 5, 2013.
Mrs. Henry was born March 22, 1925 in Crossett, Arkansas, to the late Bertie McClain Locke and the late James B. Locke.
In 1943, a few years after her father passed away, Cynthia and her mother moved to Georgetown, SC. It was there that a handsome Army soldier named John Henry spied her walking down the street one day. After introducing himself, he asked her for a date for that same night. She said she already had one so he asked her to break it. She agreed to the date and eventually agreed to marriage. They were married in 1947 and shared 59 years together before his passing in 2006.
After moving to North Charleston in 1961, Cynthia worked as a bookkeeper, first at the Charleston AFB, then for Henry Yaschik and finally, Lucas and Stubbs. During that time she also did the books for "The Store," as her family called it - Jack Krawcheck.
Cynthia was a member of Highland Park Baptist Church. During that time she served in many positions, including Sunday School, GA Leader, WMU, Training Union, and Missions. She also enjoyed singing with the choir. Cynthia was a missionary with the Southern Baptist Convention's Foreign Mission Board, serving in Brazil and with the Home Mission Board, serving in Utah.
She enjoyed gardening, reading and needlecrafts of all kinds. Cynthia learned how to use the computer long ago when the OS was simply DOS. In earlier days, she enjoyed cutting a rug with John and playing couples Bridge. She could grow anything outdoors, but was legendary at how quickly she could kill a houseplant. Somehow, Cynthia managed to teach her impatient daughter, Doreen, how to ride a bike, drive a car, and how to sew. Her only regret in life was never learning how to ride a bicycle herself. Cynthia's last years were spent siphoning off the money of the other residents of Summit Place of Daniel Island in coverall Bingo. She also enjoyed a mean game of Mexican dominoes. Her last years there were a joy because of such a dedicated and thoughtful staff.
Cynthia is survived by her daughter, Doreen Larimer and husband Jerry; her granddaughters Megan Sanders and husband Josh, and Madison Larimer; her great-grandsons Noah, Eli and Ezra Sanders; and several nieces and nephews. She loved and was loved by many dear friends over the years.
A Funeral Service will be held, April 8, 2013, in the Highland Park Baptist Church, 6211 Murray Drive, Hanahan, at 11:00 am. Interment will follow in Elmwood Cemetery, Georgetown, SC at 3:00 pm. The family will receive friends Sunday from 4:00 until 6:00 pm in the J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., West Ashley Chapel.
