Msgr. Eugene H. Livelsberger, 73, 23 Locust Drive, Conewago, died Tuesday, Jan. 6, at Hanover Hospital, where he was a patient for two months.
He was born in Edge Grove, a son of the late Henry D. and Alverta A. Smith Livelsberger.
He was a member of Scared Heart Basilica in Edge Grove. He was a priest in the Diocese of North Carolina. He was ordained June 4, 1939, and elevated to domestic prelat Dec. 17, 1970. He was the longest surviving active priest in the state of North Carolina.
His first appointment was at the Immaculate Conception, Durham, N.C.; then he worked with the Benedictans in Grennsboro, N.C.; he was in Rocky Mount, N.C. He was a civilian chaplain during World War II with the Air Force and Navy. After the war, he helped set up the Blessed Sacrament Church in Burlinton, N.C., where he stayed for 16 years. He was pastor of the Immucalate Conception Church in Durham for 10 years. While there, he was also chaplain of the Veteran's Administration Hospital. He was then assigned to integrate the racially divided parishes of Wilmington, N.C. Then he was assigned to St. Eugene's Church in Ashville, N.C. Then he was called to Charlotte, N.C., for two years. He moved to Hickory and helped establish St. Joseph's Church in Newton, N.C., and the Holy Trinity Mission in Taylorsville, N.C. He retired from St. Alousius in Hickory, N.C. on July 2, 1984. He was founder of the K of C in Hickory, N.C.
He is survived by tow brothers, John L. Livelsberger, 160 Wappler Drive, Hanover and Henry C. Livelsberger, 541 Baer Ave, Hanover; tow sisters, Mrs. Genevive J. Tressler, 623 South St., McSherrystown and Mrs. Marie J. Adams, Millersville; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Basilica in Edge Grove. The Rev. John J. McSweeney, vicar general fron the Diocese of Raleigh, N.C., will be main celebrant. Interment will be in the parish cemetery.
