Philip Clodfelter was the fifth of seven known children of John George Clodfelter (1780-1845) and Maria Magdalena Walk Gladfelter/Clodfelter (1783-1822), who married 20 Oct 1803 at Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina. After Maria died, John married Maria's elder widowed sister, Johanna "Hannah" Walk Mock (1772-1853) on 17 Feb 1824 at Friedberg, Stokes (now Forsyth) County, North Carolina but had no known additional children. The family moved to the Moravian community of West Salem, Edwards County, Illinois in 1837.

Philip married first to Catherine Gates (1818-1856) on 19 Nov 1835 at Davidson County, North Carolina. Philip and Catherine were the parents of six known children, namely:

1. Emanuel Augustine Clodfelter (1836-1899)
2. Allen Jesse Clodfelter (1840-1922)
3. Hannah Elizabeth Clodfelter (1844-1844)
4. Samuel David Clodfelter (1846-1923)
5. George Marion Clodfelter (1854-1854)
6. baby boy Clodfelter (1856-1856)

After Catherine died, Philip remarried to the widow Sophia Ann Harrison Kaericher (1818-1897), whom he married on 23 Oct 1856 at Edwards County, Illinois. Philip and Sophia were the parents of two known children, namely:

7. Lucy Jane Clodfelter Rothrock (1858-1923)
8. Havillah C. Clodfelter (1862-1922)
