Jim Thurston Lindsey, Sr., born February 1, 1926, passed away peacefully on April 2nd at his home in Redwood Valley, California. Jim was born on a farm in Bowie County, Texas and graduated from high school at Simms, Texas. He enrolled in the U.S. Army Air Corps and at the end of World War II, entered Baylor University, receiving his law degree, cum laude, in 1950. He was first elected to the Texas State Legislature in 1949 and served in the 51st through the 54th Legislatures, assuming the speakership in the 54th. At that time, he was the youngest person to ever serve as Speaker and was described by his fellow politicians as having the ability to get things done with efficiency and quiet leadership.
When Jim left politics, he and his wife, Moja, embarked on a long and successful career in commercial real estate development. Together they organized a financial institution to serve Bowie County until it was sold in 1975. They raised their children on a large cattle and quarter horse ranch in Texarkana, Texas. In later years, he and Moja built a second home in Mendocino County, California where he was able to pursue his interest in cultivating wine grapes and fruit trees. His outdoor kitchen was well used during canning time where jam, salsa, marinara sauce and other delights were produced for family and friends consumption. He and Moja loved to travel, covering much of the U.S. and parts of Mexico and Canada, first with their five children and later by themselves.

Jim is survived by his wife, Moja Yvonne (Birdwell), sons Jim Lindsey, Jr., Daniel A. Lindsey and wife, Julie, daughters Janis Lindsey Huggins and husband, George, Leigh Anne Lindsey and Moja Lynn Lindsey together with seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He also leaves behind two sisters, Dorothy Lindsey Young and Audrey Lindsey McCord. A clearness of purpose and devotion to duty, especially to his family, guided his life.
Pallbearers will be Michael McCord, Jordan Lindsey Schussler, Redford Lindsey, George Merrill, Raymond Griffin, and Fred White.
Visitation will be Sunday, April 7th from 6 to 7:30 PM. at the Texarkana Funeral Home and the funeral will be held there on Monday at 2 P.M. with graveside services for the family to follow at Sandhill Cemetery in Simms Texas. The family will be at 6505 Lakeview Drive.
