Obituary of Shirley Rosemary DeMattie Pate
(March 5, 1920 - April 4, 2013)

Gulfport, MS ~ Shirley Rosemary DeMattie Pate, age 93, died peacefully at home in the comfort of her family on Thursday, April 4, 2013. She was born March 6, 1920 in Mobile, AL.

She graduated in 1937 from Murphy High School in Mobile.

She was an active member of St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church and the ECW-Episcopal Church Women. Mrs. Pate was an active member of the following organizations: Friends of the Library serving as President for many years, Gulf Coast Opera Salon, serving as President, American Legion Auxiliary, Elk's Lodge Women's Auxiliary-President, Glen and Grove Garden Club, Hometown Ambassadors, Newcomers, Sunshine Guild, The Pilgrimage, Gulfport Yacht Club Women's Auxiliary, League of Democratic Women, Patron of Gulfport Galleria of Fine Arts, Gulf Coast Symphony Guild, member of the People for the Preservation of Jones Park, Gulfport Women's Club, Officers' Wives Club (President) , and was active in preserving the Gulfport downtown library historic building. Mrs. Pate always had wonderful stories to share.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Lieutenant Colonel William Herbert Pate, United States Air Force, retired; infant son, Samuel David Pate; and her parents, August DeMattie and Mary Ruth Raff; and a son-in-law, Copley B. "Dick" Glass, Jr.

She is survived by a son, William A. "Bill" Pate (Wanda); a daughter, Rebecca "Becky" Glass; grandchildren, Tammy Ammermann Bruce (Bill), Brandy Ammermann Wicks (Ross), William Glass; great grandchildren, Trey, Tanner and Chloe Bruce, Tristan, Abigail, and Tucker Wicks.

The family would like to thank her caregiver, Jennifer Garriga.

The funeral service is Sunday April 7, 2013 at 3:30 p.m. at St. Peter's by the Sea Episcopal Church, Gulfport where friends may visit beginning at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at Southern Memorial Park, Biloxi.

Bradford-O'Keefe 15th Street, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
