Thomas Hart arrived in the town of Ipswich, MA from England when he was about 28. He built a house which still stands, now a restaurant known as the 1640 Hart House. It is located on Linebrook Rd, across from a church and the intersection of Pineswamp Rd. Thomas lived with his parents Isaac and Elizabeth, and was a tanner. He married Alice, a local girl, and had two sons and two daughters. Thomas was the first selectman of Ipswich, chosen in 1659. As an old woman, Thomas' mother Elizabeth was accused of practicing witchcraft and was sent to Boston. She remained there for about six months until Thomas presented a petition saying that Elizabeth had never shown any signs of witchcraft. She was then allowed to return to Ipswich, where she died soon after. Thomas died in the house in 1674, and his remains were supposedly buried in the cellar of his house for a time. He now lies at the Old Burying ground on High St. in Ipswich.
