Rev. William Tompson was born in Lancaster, England in 1597. He matriculated at Oxford Unversity 13 March 1617/8 and was admitted to Brazenose College 9 May 1618. He was elected a Nowell Scholar 24 October 1620 and was graguated with a Bachelor of Arts degree on 28 February 1621/2. He was Curate of Newton Chapel Winwick, Lancashire, England 1623 to 1635. He arrived in New England in 1636. He preached at York, Maine 1637 to 1639. He was installed as preacher of the First Church Braintree (now Quincy) Mass. 16 September 1639. Here lies buried the body of the Rev. William Tompson the first pastor of Braintrey Church Who deceased 10 December 1666 Aetatis suae 68. He was a learned, solid, sound Divine Whose name and fame in both Englands did shine And by his side lies Mrs. Ann Tompson, his wife Deceased October ye 11, 1675 Aged 68 years.
