She was born on June 13, 1916 to Nathan M. Southwick and Ruth Stanton (Earle) Southwick, Maple Hill Farm, Leicester, MA. She graduated from Leicester High School in 1933 and from the Worcester Art Museum in 1936. She returned to school after her children were raised and became an LPN. She worked at Memorial Hospital in Worcester and several area nursing homes.
Sarah was a member of the Leicester Unitarian Church, its Joint Committee, and past president of the Women's Alliance. She also sang in the church choir for many years. She and Nelson welcomed foster children into their home and maintained a close relationship with many. She also delivered Meals on Wheels with her sister, Ann, until she was in her 80s. She was active in FISH coordinating rides for medical appointments. She and her husband were members of the Appalachian Mountain Club and active participants in Elderhostel. They enjoyed hiking throughout the US, White Mountains and locally. She cross-country skied into her 90s with her daughter, Carol.
Sarah will be remembered for her beautiful smile, her warm heart, her love of life, and her unbeatable energy. She loved the outdoors, nature, flowers, her garden, and the birds she fed every day.
A celebration of her life will be held Saturday, April 6th at 2PM at the Leicester Unitarian Church, 5 Washburn Square, Leicester, MA, 01524.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Leicester Unitarian Church.
