Benjamin Miles Howard, 75, passed away Thursday, April 4, 2013 at Southeast Georgia Health System in Brunswick after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held Monday, April 8, 2013, 11:00 a.m., at Edo Miller & Sons Funeral Home. Rev. Wright Culpepper, Elder Ron Scarboro and Rev. Gary Cumby will officiate. Interment will follow at Oglethorpe Memorial Gardens Cemetery on St. Simons Island.

Mr. Howard was born December 8, 1937 in Telfair County, Georgia, to the late William Thomas Howard and Bessie Lee Burch. Although Mr. Howard's mother died shortly after his birth, he was blessed with a second mother, Susie Sapp Howard, who provided him a loving home. He was also preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lee McKie.

Mr. Howard is survived by his wife of 54 years, Janette S. Howard; a son, Alan Howard and his wife Gwen of Jacksonville; daughter Lisa Chafin and her husband Rick of Augusta; and daughter Judy Howard of St. Simons who also faithfully assisted with his care for many years. He is survived by three beloved grandchildren: Miles Howard, Martha Howard and Morgan Chafin. Survivors also include two sisters, Betty Pirkle and Sue Howard, both of Eastman, and numerous nieces and nephews.

A lifelong resident of St. Simons, Mr. Howard was retired from SunTrust Bank with over 37 years of service. He was a member of Glynn Haven Baptist Church where he served for many years as a deacon, Sunday School teacher and treasurer. He loved the Lord and his church. He was a great whistler and enjoyed woodworking, singing and tinkering around his shop. But his greatest joy was serving the Lord and spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.

The family is grateful for the loving care Mr. Howard received from his physicians: Dr. David Sudduth, Dr. William Grubb, Dr. Steven Mosher; their staff; the staff of Southeast Georgia Health System; and his longtime caregiver, Willie Pinkney.

Those wishing to do so may make donations in Mr. Howard's memory to the Glynn Haven Baptist Church Building Fund.
