The death of Raymond Dunham occurred early on the morning of July 21st, when the meat truck in which he was making his regular trip to Kingston for supplies, plunged down the bank, overturning, into the Wallkill just above Dashville Falls.
Mr. Dunham was born in Westkill, Greene County, forty-seven years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alonzo Dunham. During his early years his family moved to Wallkill and later to the town of Gardiner, where Mr. Dunham attended the public school. A few years later he was appointed mail carrier through the section of the town in which he lived. This position he held for a number of years, faithfully serving the community and always courteous and accommodating.
On March 17, 1910, Mr. Dunham was married to Anna Schoonmaker, daughter to Selah and Magdalene LeFevre Schoonmaker of Gardiner. This was the culmination of a romance which began in school days, and was always a happy union.
About this time, Mr. Dunham and his brother Omar started a butcher shop in Gardiner village. This continued for several years and then the partnership was dissolved and Mr. Dunham conducted the business alone. Fourteen years ago the family moved to New Paltz village where Mr. Dunham has conducted a meat market on Main Street.
Mr. Dunham was a kind and helpful friend and neighbor, never sparing himself if there was something that he could do for others. If there was sickness and a car was needed Mr. Dunham's was always in readiness.
He joined the Reformed Church at Gardiner at an early age and was always a faithful attendant. Later he transferred his membership to the New Paltz Reformed Church. He was a member of the Consistory for several years, serving as Deacon. He also had been a member of the Dutch Arms.
Last March, Mr. Dunham was elected a trustee of the village.
Besides his widow, Mr. Dunham is survived by four daughters, Lena, Margaret, Laura and Isabelle, and five sons, Harry, Walter, Lester, Roy and Lloyd; also one sister, Mrs. Jessie Lockwood of Kingston, and three brothers, Ralph Dunham of Michigan, Bert Dunham of Westkill, Greene County, and Omar Dunham of North Haven, Connecticut.
The funeral was held at the Reformed Church on July 24th with the Rev. Edwin D. Miner of Tappan, N.Y. and Rev. Otto Nichols of New Paltz, officiating. Interment was in New Paltz Rural Cemetery.
