J. A. MAC KENZIE DIED YESTERDAY
MEMBER OF HABERDASHERY FIRM SUCCUMBS TO PNEUMONIA

After an illness of but a few weeks John A. MacKenzie, aged 47, one of the owners of the MacKenzie, Bostock & Monroe haberdashery store, Monroe avenue, died yesterday morning at his home, 64 Atwood street.

Mr. MacKenzie was stricken with pneumonia five weeks ago. His condition grew continually worse despite the efforts of expert medical aid, and it was felt almost certain during the last week of his illness the he could not recover.

At the age of 26 Mr. MacKenzie came to Grand Rapids from his home in Caro, Mich. He entered the employ of Baxter company soon after his arrival here, and remained with that company for 21 years, finally being given charge of its haberdashery department.

He resigned his position with the clothing company last November, becoming one of the members of the firm of MacKenzie, Bostock & Monroe, which opened a store on Monroe avenue. Mr. MacKenzie had just built a new home at 64 Atwood street, which the family had occupied but two weeks when Mr. MacKenzie was striken.

He is survived by a widow and two sons, Robert, aged 13, and Kenneth, aged 5. He was a member of York lodge, F. & A. M., and an usher at the First Church of Christ Scientists. [Source: Grand Rapids Herald, 5 May 1912, page 3]
