Funeral services for Harold E. Scherer, 78 of Davenport will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, April 9, 2013 at Cunnick-Collins Mortuary. The family will greet friends from 3:00-7:00 p.m. on Monday evening at the mortuary. Interment will be at Rock Island National Cemetery. Mr. Scherer passed away on Wednesday, April 3, 2013 at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus, Davenport.

Harold Eugene Scherer was born on September 16, 1934 in Scott Co., IA, the son of Robert and Dorothy (Brown) Scherer. He served in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. Following his military obligation, he married Joy Eckermann in 1959. She preceded him in death in December of 1989. Harold later married Sherry Canavit in Bettendorf on March 13, 1991. He worked at The Davenport Foundry and later at McLaughlin Manufacturing until his retirement in 2000. For over 50 years, Harold farmed in rural Scott County and continued to work on the family farm until present day. He was a member of the Quad City Antique Ford Car Club, the Scott Co. Cattleman's Association, and the National Limousin Cattle Association. He was an avid bowler, loved to read, and was a collector of antique cars and Sleepy Eye Pottery. Harold spent his life devoted to growing and nurturing the century farm in rural Scott. Co. that was entrusted to his care in 1963. He loved the cattle and God's natural world. He was a farmer first and foremost to everyone that met and knew him.

He is survived by his Wife: Sherry Scherer of Davenport; two Daughters: Linda (Gary) Sears of Searsboro, IA, Carol (Andy) Newkirk of Davenport; a Son: Dale (Ann) Scherer of rural Davenport; a Step-Son: Tony (Lori) LaMantia of Colona, IL; a Sister: Alice Morris of Jonesboro, LA; seven Grandchildren: Amanda Weber, Cody Brown, Cory Brown, Angie Schmidt, Josh Scherer, Eric Scherer, Mitchell Newkirk; two Step-Grandchildren: Nathan LaMantia, Alyssa LaMantia; and eight Great-Grandchildren.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Joy, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Ralph and John Scherer.

The family would like to extend their gratitude to the staff at Genesis Medical Center – East Campus, Intensive Care Unit for their wonderful care and attention.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family.

Gravesite Details Burial has not taken place in Rock Island National Cemetery.
