Civil War Union Brevet Brigadier General. Born in Cayuga County, New York, he was a lawyer in practice, when enlisted in the Union Army and was commissioned a Lieutenant of the 5th Company, 1st Battalion, Ohio Sharpshooters at the start of the Civil War. Promoted Captain, he held a position at headquarters of the Army of the Cumberland, when the 197th Ohio Volunteer Infantry was formed. Rising through the ranks to Lieutenant Colonel in command of the 197th Ohio Infantry, he participated in all its battles to include Chickamauga, Mission Ridge, Atlanta and Nashville. For meritorious services, he was brevetted Brigadier General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. After the war he was a judge in Cleveland, Ohio and wrote several books on legal subjects. He died at age 79 in Cleveland, Ohio.
