Civil War Union Army Officer. He was commissioned as 1st Lieutenant of Company I, 4th New Jersey Militia on April 25, 1861. However, on June 1, 1861 he was discharged from New Jersey State service, and he recieved a commission as a 1st Lieutenant in the newly-raised 11th United States Regular Infantry (to date from May 14, 1861). He served in the field until he resigned on August 9, 1864. On March 13, 1865 he was brevetted Captain, US Regular Army and Major, US Regular Army for "faithful and meritorious services during the war".
