She was born on April 27, 1935 in Greenville, TN to the late Rev. DB and Isabelle "Belle" Cooper. Mrs. Yates moved a lot growing up but always considered herself being from Tennessee. She attended Gallaudet College and went on to graduate from Hiawassee College with an AA Degree.
Mrs. Yates met her husband while attending a Deaf-related conference at Gallaudet College in 1963. They married in 1965 and she moved to New Carrollton, MD to be with him. In 1978 they moved to Bowie, MD and the in 2002 to Fredericksburg, VA. She then spent a year at Brightview Assisted Living before moving to St. Elizabeth's.
Mrs. Yates retired from the Washington Post newspaper in 1996.
She was a member of Magothy United Methodist Church of the Deaf and attended there until she went into nursing care. She was a proud Methodist coming from a line of Methodist pastors.
Mrs. Yates was a very devoted mother and wife. While living in Fredericksburg, VA she enjoyed playing cards with her deaf lady friends.
In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sisters Doris Cooper Caldwell and Allie Anderson.
Mrs. Yates is survived by her husband of 53 years, Leo Yates, Sr., her twin children Rev. Leo Yates, Jr. and Sarah Yates, her nephews; Joe Anderson, Rev. John Anderson, Steve Anderson, Chip Caldwell, and John Moore
