not sure what is correct dates so only listing in bio for now. Please advise if you know.
Jan 2016 update. Tim Burgess (#47983260) Read dates on marker and believes 1826-1882. Thank you
1850 census shows Franklin Smith, age 21 or 27. The 21 would make his birth year 1829. Or, if the 27 was correct, and the check for "attended school" was incorrect, the birth year would be 1823. The 1860 census shows Frances M. Smith, age 36, making the birth year around 1824. The 1880 census has him as age 57. Another website as well as another cousin had his birthdate as 18 Mar 1821. Years ago, a cousin found the tombstone and read it as 18 Mar 1823. In the notes from Hester Smith Richards' (Francis Marion's sister), the birth was listed as March 15, 1823.
1870 census show him b. in SC and not GA, but all others have him born in GA.
Francis Marion "Franklin" Smith served in the military in Company H, Alabama 28th Infantry Regiment.
He was married to Martha Ann Miller on 23 Nov 1854, in Cass (later Bartow) County, Georgia. They moved to St. Clair Co., AL between 1858 and 1860.
