Vernel F. Reed, age 95, of Magee, MS passed away on April 04, 2013, at Magee General Hospital. He was born August 07, 1917 in Simpson County to the late Anse and Nora Reed. He worked most of his life as a farmer and was employed with Rankin Wholesale and Pace Oil Company in Magee. His most memorable employment was when he served for many years as Bailiff for the Simpson County Court System in Mendenhall, MS.

He was a long-time member of Athens Baptist Church where he served a number of years as Chairman of the Deacons.

Survivors include his devoted wife of 74 years, Silas G. Reed of Magee; his two daughters: Jean Reed Adams and her husband, Fred, of Jackson and Donna Reed May and her husband, Bob, of Brandon. Also surviving him are 19 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren, and 7 great-great grandchildren, several nieces and nephews, and a host of family and friends. He was preceded in death by his son, James Larry Reed, his brother, Garland Reed, and his sister, Mattie Lois Grubbs, all of Mendenhall, MS.

Funeral services will be at 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 07, 2013, at Tutor Funeral Home Chapel in Magee. Visitation will be 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 07, 2013, prior to funeral services. Burial will be in Athens Baptist Church Cemetery. Rev. Jerry Sullivan and Rev. John Coleman will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to the Athens Baptist Church Cemetery Fund, 1535 Athens Road, Mendenhall, MS 38114.

The Reed family would like to express thanks and gratitude to Dr. Charles Pruitt, the staff at Magee General Hospital, and the staff of Gentiva Hospice Ministries for their loving support and care.
