It was at his home in Spring Hill that Confederate General Earl Van Dorn was killed by the husband of Jesse McKissack Peters. The home is now part of the Tennessee Children's Home. Martin's brother, Nathaniel, owned a sister plantation, Rippavilla and was a Major in the Confederate Army.
