Frances was the daughter of Levi Ebenezer Smith and Rhoda Susannah (McKibben) Smith. Frances was married four times. She was married first to Carl Walter Hughes (1848-1922) on November 7, 1875 in Washington County, Oregon. They had one daughter, Clara M. Hughes. On November 18, 1883 in Washington County, Oregon, Frances married her second husband, Joel Jasper Clark (1854-1898). Frances and Joel had four children together: Beatrice (who was adopted as a child and raised by her aunt and uncle, Sarah (Clark) Kidder and John Flint Kidder), Archie Levi Clark, Frank Dewitt Clark and Alma B. Clark. Frances married a third time between 1900 and 1910 to a Mr. Stevens. Frances married her fourth husband, Daniel Alexander Black (1856-1952) on April 2, 1913 in Walla Walla, Washington. Daniel and Frances were divorced by 1930 and Frances went back to using the surname "Clark" (which was her second husband's surname.
