David was admitted to the bar in Vermont in 1821, and began his law practice in St. Albans, Vermont. He was living there when he married Emily Marsh on October 15, 1832 in Hartford, Vermont. This was David's 2nd marriage.
In 1838, David and his family moved to Burlington. For three years, he served as treasurer of the University of Vermont, where Emily's brother (James Marsh) served as President. In 1843, David served in the Vermont State Senate. He was elected city Recorder in Burlington 1865 - 1868.
