Western Religious Figure. Born in St. Pierre Riviere de Sud, Canada, he was ordained a Catholic Priest in 1821 and held several church positions around Montréal area. On July 28, 1846, he was appointed Bishop and on September 5, 1847, he arrived in Walla Walla, Washington and was the first Roman Catholic Bishop in the North Western Territory. There he established the Walla Walla diocese and in 1850, he transferred to the new Nesqually diocese, Seattle. In 1853, he built the St. James Cathedral, the first in Vancouver and remained as Bishop until he retired in December 1879. He continued to live at the Diocese of Nesqually in his retirement, and died at age 89 in Vancouver.
