Emma Batts Green


MOULTRIE — Emma Batts Green, 89, died Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, at Park Regency of Moultrie.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 21, at Cobb Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Hale Bishop officiating. Interment will follow in Pinecrest Memory Gardens. Casketbearers will be Larry Adams Jr., Jeff Green, Corey Novotny, Gene West, Jim Cox and David Brown.

Born May 9, 1919, in Duplin County, N.C., she was the daughter of the late Charlie McLean Batts and Malissa Chadwick Batts. She was a resident of Myrtle Beach, S.C., for many years, and was crowned Miss Myrtle Beach in 1940. It was in Myrtle Beach that she met her late husband, James Harold "Jim" Green, who was a major in the United States Air Force Reserve. They were married for 54 years. She was past president of the Myrtle Beach American Legion Auxiliary and was a Red Cross volunteer. She and her husband traveled to many different bases during World War II. In 1951, they came to the Hawthorne School of Aeronautics at Spence Field in Moultrie, and Moultrie has been home since then. She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Moultrie, where she was a member of the Neill McDonald Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Moultrie Lions Club and was named a Melvin Jones Fellow. She was also a member of the Moultrie Federated Guild, Azalea Garden Club and the Magnolia Bridge Club.

"She was an accomplished seamstress and loved to grow flowers. She was a loving mother and grandmother and was devoted to her church," said her family.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William J. Batts and; two sisters, Helen B. Ballard and Ruby B. Amato.

Survivors include one son, James H. Green Jr. and wife Sharman of Edwards, Colo.; one daughter, Kippy G. Adams and husband Larry of Moultrie; one brother, Walter T. Batts and wife Juanita of Mooresville, N.C.; two sisters-in-law, Gladys G. Parker of Wilmington, N.C., and Lillian Green of Conway S.C.; and three grandchildren, Larry Adams Jr. and wife Joanie of Byron, Ga., Melissa Novotny and husband Corey of Jackson, Ga., and Jeff Green of Steamboat Springs, Colo.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20, at Cobb Funeral Chapel.

The family may be contacted at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Larry Adams, 121 Poplar Trail in Moultrie.

Cobb Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
