Martin Gysbert was the fourth of 11 children born to Gysbert "Steve" and Adrianna "Jane" (nee VanGorp) DeJong. Siblings were -

The family lived in the Black Oak, Mahaska Co area on a farm. They had some Horses, cattle, swine, and poultry. They raised wheat, corn, oats, hay, and Irish potatoes. They made butter, cheese and molasses.

They attended the Reformed Church, and the children all attended the Wheat Grove School. Martin went through the 8th grade. He registered for the draft for both WWI and WWII.

February 22, 1906, Martin married Henrietta, daughter of Mathias and Dortje (Van Beck) Verros. They had 10 children -

In 1910 Martin rented a farm, but by 1920 he owned a farm. In 1940 he is a carpenter living in his own home with an income of $700 for the year.

Martin was laid to rest at 84 years old.
